Ziele und Inhalte

This module introduces students to critical strategies for reading literary texts through the analysis of shorter fiction, (auto)biographical writing and poetry.
The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the historical, cultural and biographical contexts of literary narratives in general, and of the historical and thematic concerns addressed by Indigenous Australian authors in particular.
Topics covered include: The (Auto)biographic genre; Post-colonial writing; Revisionist historiography; Urban and remote experiences; Language revival and revitalisation through fiction; Australian linguistic landscapes.

Lehr- und Lernformen

Block seminar with daily contact hours used for group work and plenary discussion, short input lectures and screenings.

The module will include daily reading assignments of primary texts to be discussed in class. All primary texts will be made available electronically via the Moodle course platform, together with selected critical literature and self-study materials.

Form des Leistungsnachweises

Students are required to study the assigned readings. They will be expected to participate actively in group work and critical class discussion.

Furthermore, students complete the following task:
Give a short in-class presentation (approximately 15 minutes, plus 10 minutes discussion), accompanied by a 1-2 page handout complete with bibliography on one of the topics listed in the course programme.

Performance will be assessed on the basis of coursework and participation in class discussion (pass/fail). The class presentation will be assessed according to the following criteria.

PRESENTATION:
CONTENT
The content of the presentation is factual, informative and comprehensive. Relevant aspects are covered.

ANALYSIS
The presentation demonstrates a sound understanding of the course topic and includes references to the key concepts discussed in class.

FORM
The form, structure and length of the presentation is appropriate and clear.
Visuals are well chosen and there is a good balance between text and visual content.

LANGUAGE AND STYLE
The language used in the presentation is at least B2. (i.e. The student can give clear, detailed descriptions and presentations on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest, expanding and supporting ideas with subsidiary points and relevant examples; Can develop a clear argument, expanding and supporting their points of view at some length with subsidiary points and relevant examples; Can give a clear, prepared presentation, giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view; Can take a series of follow-up questions with a degree of fluency and spontaneity which poses no strain for either themselves or the audience, cf. CEFR descriptors, 2020)

RESEARCH AND ORIGINALITY
The presentation is the result of research, is creative and includes original material. Sources are used critically and selectively.
