Ziele und Inhalte
Teaching linguistic competences aims at making students familiar with key issues related to the teaching of communicative and linguistic competences as indicated in Lehrplan 21. Linguistic competences form the formal resources for meaningful language use. In the school context of the German speaking part of Switzerland, one finds these competences in Lehrplan 21 under the competences ‘focus on language’ (Language awareness, Vocabulary, Grammar, Pronunciation, Spelling, Reflection).
The following learning objectives reflect the requirements of this module:
The students…
•know what language awareness and linguistic landscape is
•are aware of the importance as well as complexity of vocabulary learning and can apply theoretical core principles in teaching vocabulary
•can understand the role of grammar in foreign language learning and are able to support pupils’ grammatical development
•understand basic principles for teaching pronunciation and spelling
•are familiar with teaching materials used in Secondary schools in Central Switzerland, namely the course book Open World, and can discuss how linguistic competences are treated in the course book
•display a wide repertoire of motivating learning activities to foster communicative competence
•are equipped with the necessary tools to teach differentiated lessons in a heterogeneous classroom
This course complements the module "Introduction to Linguistics" (EN01.05-S1) and its corresponding lecture "Grundlagen der Sprachwissenschaft" (SY02.01-S1).
Lehr- und Lernformen
Throughout the module students will be expected to complete preparatory assignments to enable them to make an informed contribution to the seminars, providing their own personal interpretation and understanding. Theoretical inputs from the lecturer as well as examples, course book material and practical trainings will deepen students’ understanding of the different content areas.
Form des Leistungsnachweises
