Ziele und Inhalte
CONTENT AND AIMS
This course is an introduction to the study of the structure and use of language. It aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the core areas that they will need in their initial and subsequent study of English.
Topics covered include the nature of speech sounds and how they interrelate (phonetics and phonology), the way words are composed (morphology), how words are combined into phrases and clauses (syntax), and how meaning is constructed (semantics) and intended (pragmatics).
The course in based upon the lecture class Grundlagen der Sprachwissenschaft (SY03.01-S1) and complements the course Teaching Linguistic Competences (EN01.04-S1).
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
• understand how language works, with particular reference to the structure of English
• apply the essential tools and the active vocabulary to discuss language and to analyse its structure and function
• demonstrate their awareness of linguistic phenomena in their own teaching of English
With reference to the "Referenzrahmen" of the PH Luzern, the module prepares students for the following "Handlungsfelder":
