Teilmodulbeschreibung

Ziele und Inhalte

The second part of the two-part module 'Ways of Reading and Writing' continues the exploration of the Gothic genre begun in the previous term. While part one focussed on the reading of Gothic texts, part two is concerned with writing. In the week of the block seminar, students prepare a short essay (in English) based on their readings of the short stories and the theory of the Gothic.
Possible topics for the essay include the Gothic short stories discussed earlier as well as a selection of additional primary texts (all short stories) available from the Moodle course platform. A list with suggestions for topics will be circulated at the obligatory introductory meeting on Monday morning.
At the end of the week, the students not only will have a deeper understanding of how and why some authors deploy (and often manipulate) Gothic themes and conventions in their texts, but they will also have practiced and improved their own writing skills.

The course is taught as a block seminar (Monday through Friday) with obligatory contact and self-study hours. Participants are expected to attend both the introductory meeting on Monday morning and the concluding plenary meeting.
In addition, students have to arrange a individual meeting with the instructor in order to report about their progress and receive feedback. The meetings take place between Tuesday morning and Thursday, and last about 45 minutes.
All other hours are self-study time for the students to individually research and write their essay. The instructor is available for further consultations throughout the week.
