Ziele und Inhalte

In an oral exam students display their understanding of the principles of teaching English to young learners. The exam covers the contents of the courses English methodology EN01.01/SY01.02 - EN01.04.

Form:
In an oral exam students will display their understanding of the principles of teaching English to young learners. The exam will last 20 minutes per candidate and is conducted in English. Students need to analyse an assigned coursebook extract and discuss three terms which cover the contents of the module in English methodology EN01.01/SY01.02 – EN01.04.

Procedure:
Preparation time (approx. 20 minutes)
Candidates get a coursebook extract and will analyse it in terms of methodological aspects and the curriculum. Furthermore, they develop a possible teaching sequence based on the extract and enriched with their own ideas. They are allowed to take notes. The use of any kind of resources is not permitted.

Oral exam (20 minutes)
Part A: Referring to the coursebook extract, candidates explain the underlying theory and justify their teaching procedure (approx. 5 minutes).
Part B: Candidates will get a set of three terms and by commenting on them display their understanding of the topics covered in the English methodology modules. Additionally, they elaborately discuss links between the three terms and the assigned coursebook extract (approx. 15’).
Throughout the exam, candidates will answer the examiner's questions.

Assessment Criteria
Part A: (8 points)
- Students display in-depth knowledge and understanding of subject-specific methodology related to the coursebook extract. Moreover, they use subject-specific terminology correctly and consistently. (4 points)
- Students bridge theory and practice by presenting a realistic, plausible and creative teaching sequence based on the coursebook extract. (4 points)
Part B: (6 points per term)
- Students display in-depth knowledge and understanding of subject-specific methodology. Moreover, they use subject-specific terminology correctly and consistently. (3 points)
- Students apply methodological knowledge to imaginary teaching situations realistically and plausibly. (3 points)

Six more points are added if the following aims are achieved:
- Students elaborately discuss links between the terms and the coursebook extract. (3 points)
- Students structure their inputs logically and are clear and comprehensible in their answers to questions of the examiner. (3 points)
19 out of 32 points have to be fulfilled in order to pass the exam.

In the evening of the exam day, students will receive an email telling them whether they have passed the exam or not. Once the final mark is communicated by the Prüfungssekretariat, students can contact their examiner in order to get further information on their performance.

Modalitäten der Repetition

The exam can be repeated once.
