Ziele und Inhalte

The preliminary practical training serves as a suitability assessment. The professional practical training can only be started once the preliminary practical training has been successfully completed and assessed as "satisfactory."

In the preliminary practical training, students have the opportunity to determine, based on their own experiences in the field, whether they possess the necessary qualifications to be an English teacher at the upper secondary level. Additionally, the practical training allows students, together with the practice teacher and a lecturer in subject didactics (or the practice coordinator) from PH Luzern, to identify developmental focal points on which they will work during the further course of their vocational training.

The preliminary practical training is worth 3 ECTS credits, is conducted at a Maturity school (Gymnasium, FMS, BMS), and includes a total of 18 individual lessons, which students both observe (up to 3 lessons) and teach themselves while continually reflecting on them.

Students develop competencies in lesson planning and learn to select and justify the student competencies and corresponding learning objectives to be promoted in the classroom. They learn to reflexively relate systematic scientific knowledge (knowledge 'about' the practice) to practical action knowledge (knowledge 'in' the practice). They acquire the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate their teaching in a way that is action-, content-, and competency-oriented. They must possess organizational skills that allow them to effectively use resources and appropriately involve participants. They can adequately assess and consider their own resources.

Their professional ethical competence is demonstrated, for example, by communicating with students in a way that builds an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.

Form des Leistungsnachweises

At the end of the practical training, students submit a portfolio to the practice coordinator, which includes the following components:

Three lesson plans that the students have developed using a planning tool.
Two competency assessments conducted by the practice teacher, one at the beginning and the other towards the end of the practical training.
An additional competency assessment conducted by the subject didactics specialist.
