Ziele und Inhalte

CONTENT AND AIMS
This course offers an introduction to the study of the interaction between language and society. It aims to provide the opportunity to explore language in a variety of social contexts, and to learn how social factors such as geography, ethnicity, gender and age impact upon language use and determine linguistic variation and change.
Topics covered include:
• Language, dialect and accent
• Language, identity and attitude
• Language and social groups
• Language and ethnicity
• English as a lingua franca

LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course students will be able to:
• demonstrate a deeper understanding of the social dimension of language
• show familiarity with the key concepts and methods of variationist sociolinguistics
• engage critically in discussions on sociolinguistic topics
• apply the key findings of the course to the field of education and language teaching
