Ziele und Inhalte

The first module in English Methodology lays the foundation for didactical principles that will be discussed in subsequent modules. It seeks to engage students in learning about teaching English as a foreign language in the secondary classroom and is designed to assess both students’ suitability and motivation as future English
teachers.
Firstly, students will reflect on their own language learning biography, becoming aware of their personal beliefs regarding “good” language teaching, which may impact their future teaching. Secondly, an introduction to modern language teaching approaches and strategies for supporting pupils’ understanding forms the basis for in-depth
exploration of key issues. Furthermore, students will gain an understanding of the linguistic, political, and economic
context in which English as the first foreign language is taught and become familiar with essential documents such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (2001), Lehrplan 21, and course books. Since the overarching goal of teaching foreign languages in public schools is to foster pupils’ functional plurilingualism, it
becomes evident that teachers must make pupils aware of the synergies between languages.

Learning objectives:
Students
• know the history of teaching language methods and understand implications for learning and teaching languages.
• reflect on their own language learning biography and become aware of their subjective learning theory.
• understand the linguistic, political, and economic context in which English as the first foreign language is taught
and refer to the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” (CEFR) as a reference document for

• are familiar with the structure and the objectives of the course book “Open World”. can apply general principles for
teaching the four skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) including mediation and strategies.
