Ziele und Inhalte
CONTENT AND AIMS
This course is concerned with some of the major events, figures and movements in African American history and culture, from the days of slavery to the present. It explores how the cultural identity of black Americans has been shaped by centuries of discrimination, marginalization and racism, and how the struggle for equality has also brought hope and change.
The aim is to develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of how this experience has been negotiated by intellectuals, writers and musicians through the critical study of a range of literary texts by African Americans (stories, essays, speeches, poetry and lyrics) in their historical and social contexts.
Topics covered include:
• Slavery and slave narratives.
• Segregation and racism in early 20th-century America.
• The New Negro: Writings of the Harlem Renaissance.
• Black voices from blues to jazz and beyond.
• The African American Civil Rights Struggle.
• Black Lives Matter: The issue of race in the US today.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Having successfully completed this course students will be able to:
• chart the broad contours of the history of black people in the United States
• display an informed and nuanced understanding of the African American experience and its cultural legacy
• identify and discuss some of the major figures and movements who contributed to this legacy
• demonstrate awareness of the intersection of race, identity and politics
• apply the findings of the course to the field of education and language teaching
With reference to the "Referenzrahmen" of the PH Luzern, the module prepares students for the following "Handlungsfelder":

FORM AND TEACHING METHODS
Regular seminar course with input lectures, study questions, plenary discussions, screenings and two written in-class assignments. Weekly readings of the texts to be discussed in class. All input is in English.
