Ziele und Inhalte

Mastering the Basics aims at making students familiar with basic teaching techniques and teaching material for the primary English classroom. An introduction to modern language teaching approaches as well as means of supporting pupils’ understanding forms the basis for in-depth exploring of key issues related to the teaching of communicative and linguistic competences as indicated in Lehrplan 21.
Principles for teaching listening, reading, speaking, writing as well as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and spelling are introduced and transferred to practical activities suitable for primary school pupils.

The following learning objectives reflect the requirements of this module:
The students…

•can demonstrate basic knowledge of modern language teaching approaches (TBL, CLIL, TPR).
•can manage a class in age-appropriately graded English (berufsspezifische Sprachkompetenz).
•can name and categorize varied, subject-specific scaffolding techniques.
•are familiar with teaching materials used in primary schools in Switzerland and can discuss their advantages and limitations.
•can apply general principles for teaching the four skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) including mediation and strategies.
•are aware of the importance as well as complexity of vocabulary learning and can apply theoretical core principles in teaching.
•can discuss the role of grammar in foreign language learning and are able to support pupils’ development of grammatical competence.
•can explain basic principles for teaching pronunciation and spelling.
•display a wide repertoire of motivating learning activities to foster communicative competence.
•can write a rough planning in line with the key principles of modern, competence-oriented communicative language teaching for their subsequent teaching practice.

With regard to PHLU framework of reference, activities throughout the semester are geared towards establishing of basic professional competences:

Lehr- und Lernformen

Throughout the module students will be expected to complete preparatory assignments to enable them to make an informed contribution to the seminars, providing their own personal interpretation and understanding. Theoretical inputs from the lecturer as well as examples, course book material and practical trainings will deepen students’ understanding of the different content areas.

Form des Leistungsnachweises

There will be a written examination of the contents of the module using closed and open questions which refer to theory as well as practical implementation. The questions must be answered in English.
The exam lasts a maximum of 90 minutes and is conducted with a digital format (Moodle Test) using the "Safe Exam Browser".

The exam is structured as follows:
8 closed questions asking for a precise term or a short answer
10 open questions asking for theoretical knowledge and/or practical implementation
2 open questions asking for critical argumentation

The assessment of the exam will be based on the following criteria:
Students
•show in-depth understanding of the theoretical concepts
•provide practical examples
•critically discuss aspects of language teaching from multiple perspectives
•answer logically and coherently using correct terminology

Modalitäten der Repetition

The retake takes place in the first week of the spring semester 2026.
The third and last chance requires a repetition of the module.
