Ziele und Inhalte

This course explores the relationship between language and the human mind. It aims to provide students with a broad understanding of what enables humans to acquire language. It seeks to develop students' knowledge of the psycholinguistic factors involved in the processes of language acquisition and use.
Topics covered include:
• Theories of language learning
• First and second language acquisition
• Language and the brain
• Language deprivation and the critical period hypothesis
• Bilingualism
• Multimodal critical discourse analysis
• The reading process

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to
• show familiarity with some key issues and theories in the production and comprehension of human language.
• demonstrate knowledge of how we acquire our first and subsequent languages
• identify some of the cognitive operations involved in language processing in the brain
• apply the key findings of the course to the field of education and language teaching.
