Cultures of the English-speaking World

Ziele und Inhalte

English is a global language and a gateway to information and communication in politics, business and the media worldwide, for both private and professional use. As future teachers of English, it is essential to have a good understanding of where English comes from and how it has developed over time.

Module Content
This module explores the linguistic, socio-historical and cultural phenomena associated with the English-speaking world. It examines the various strands of British expansionism (from colonialism to imperialism) and considers countries that represent them. It examines the importance of English around the world, not only in the context of globalisation but also in terms of language policy. Literary and non-literary material will be used to illustrate significant moments in the history of a particular English-speaking region or country, and to provide venues for discussion. This module will encourage the development of communication and presentation skills, critical thinking and evaluation, and a spirit of academic enquiry.

Aims
By the end of the module, students should be able to
- Understand and describe the forces and directions involved in the rise of English from a local idiom to a global language;
- be familiar with the linguistic and historical backgrounds of selected English-speaking regions/countries;
- demonstrate an increased ability to critically analyse the impact of English as an international lingua franca.
